Dispatch: Keeping Busy in Tough Times
by Marissa Harris ‘22
It has been more than three weeks since students have stepped foot into Sherwood and been surrounded by their friends and teachers. With all of this time on our hands, kids have been utilizing it differently.
Originally, I thought this break would be a time to relax and get away from the stress of tests, quizzes, and projects. I soon figured out the severity of what is going on in this world. While not getting to see my friends every day has been hard, it is necessary. I have started to figure out some activities to get me away from my phone and to keep my family and me safe.
Going on runs has been an outlet for me to stay in shape. The original two weeks began with me running at the track, but the track was soon closed. I have continued to run on my own to the best of my ability, keeping distance from the other people around me. While we might not have an outdoor track season, getting exercise and going outside has been a way to get my mind off of all of the stress.
With both of my parents working from home, I have helped them by cooking meals and baking treats. Baking has also been another way for me to get off my phone. Some things I have made are nutella/banana crepes, smoothie bowls, pasta, and cookies. A very popular phone app, TikTok, has shown me some of these recipes to make.
On the weekends, my parents have made it a mission to go to as many parks as possible to get some fresh air. This has been good for my driving because I have gotten many hours in, going there and back. We have walked around Brookside Gardens, the Agricultural Farm Park, Rachel Carson, Centennial Park, and more.
This time period has been hard for everyone, but staying home will get us through quicker. Play a board game, learn a new language, or go on a walk. We are all in this together.
