Winter Storms Extend School Year by One Day
By Noah Rosendorf ’17
MCPS requested a waiver of two days from the State Board. The State Board accepted this waiver, so the last day of school will now be on June 15, which will be an early release day, instead of June 12. MCPS has four built-in snow days per year before extending the school year, and there has been seven snow days this year. MCPS has requested a waiver of three days from the state to not have to extend the school year. However, the State Board has declined the three day waiver.
The state law requires a 180-day school year. By MCPS requesting a waiver for two days, State Superintendent Lillian M. Lowery noted that the MCPS school year would still exceed the state law for number of school days.
