Sherwood Softball Off To a Superb Start

by Reid Duvall ’27

After a tough 5-3 loss to Chopticon in last season’s state championship, this 2026 Sherwood softball team is looking for a better result on Memorial Day weekend. This year, the team is off to a 5-0 start with wins over tough teams such as Damascus, Urbana, and Walter Johnson, and blowouts over Blair and Whitman. The team has ridden strong pitching thus far from senior Reagan Corb and sophomore Kylie Valois, allowing just seven runs total so far. The offense has been great as well, averaging 12 runs a game.

To open the season, the team got a 14-0 win over Blair on the back of a no-hitter from Corb and 13 hits from the offense. Next, they faced two well-regarded programs in Damascus and Urbana. The Damascus game was scoreless through four innings before Sherwood put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Corb, Valois, and Emerson Long. The four-run bottom of the fifth was enough for Sherwood to get the 7-3 win. Again, a four-run inning put the Warriors ahead against Urbana, this time in the bottom of the second, putting Sherwood up early on a grand Slam from senior catcher Faith Goolsby. “These wins show that despite the loss of six seniors, we still can come together as a team and win tough games,” said Long.

Six Urbana errors and dominant pitching from Valois and Corb helped hand Sherwood a 9-2 win. The most recent of the games was WJ, who took the Warriors to extra innings. WJ tied the game in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to tie it at 5. In the bottom of the eighth, the Warriors walked it off on a single by junior Elly Ylaya. Corb threw another complete game, striking out 8 and allowing just 1 earned run.
