Not Expanding Student Interest
by Deepika Shrestha ‘27
The Sherwood administration has recently not been expanding elective classes even though students have registered for them next year. Many electives are just one class despite many kids applying that it could be more than one. For example, more than fifty applied to the newspaper elective but there will only be one class next year. Some teachers have to remove students from a long list that applied due to not having enough classes for them. The reason there are not many electives is because students have to complete core classes so there are not a lot of elective classes.
Students have so many interests and school can be one of the only ways that students are able to express themselves. It’s important that students are able to express and explore their interests in any way possible which could be through a class. Having just one big class puts more pressure on the teacher than having a couple smaller classes. Most teachers are willing to also teach these classes as they are interested in the subject just as much or more than the students. Core classes are obviously important, but an elective class can have a greater impact on a student’s interest than a class a student has to complete.
