Varsity Football Cruises to State Quarterfinals with a Statement Win
by Reid Duvall ‘27
The varsity football team took down Oakdale in the 2nd round of the playoffs. In what was predicted to be one of the closest games of the season for both teams, Sherwood pounded Oakdale. The Warriors were searching for revenge after a big loss to Oakdale last year in the 2nd round. Sherwood returned the favor with a 35-0 win last Friday.
Sherwood got on the board early with a 55-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Khalil Wilson, who also added a rushing touchdown right before the half. Things got chippy later in the 1st quarter when Sherwood was given an unnecessary roughness penalty for hitting an Oakdale player as he was going out of bounds. This caused an uproar on both sidelines and set the mood for the rest of the game. This didn’t bother the Warriors and if anything motivated them as they dominated the rest of the game. The statement win showed that Sherwood can beat a lot of teams in the state and is certainly a threat in 3A.
Sherwood staff and players thought that some of the media was underrating them before the game with a lot of people picking Oakdale to win. “Yeah, that definitely motivated us. We knew we were the better team and wanted to prove some of our doubters wrong,” said sophomore quarterback Matthew Larsen.
This week on Friday, November 22, Franklin High School out of Baltimore County will come to play at Sherwood in the state quarterfinals. Franklin sits at 8-3 after a 6-0 win vs Overlea last round. Franklin has shut out their last three opponents amidst a 4-game win streak, and they look to be a test for the Warriors’ offense.
