Field Hockey Builds Winning Momentum

With a 3-3 even slate of wins to losses this season, the varsity field hockey team is picking up pace after a tough start to the season. After consecutive losses against Wootton and Damascus to begin the season, the team quickly came together as a squad to turn things around.

“I would say the impact of the graduating Seniors was definitely felt, but this year’s team has really stepped up and defensively we are stronger than ever,” explained Coach Walter Velasquez.

After finding their footing in a mounting number of wins, the team has very good reason to be hopeful. In a recent game against Blake, the Warriors won 5-0, swapping the defense and offense at the end to give the players a chance to try something new. Velasquez attributed a lot of this momentum to the team’s goalie, junior Lilah Boig, and the aggressive front line attackers senior Riley Friend and sophomore Sophia Kaser.

“Our team has been working hard all season long and we are working to regain our regional championship like we have three out of the last five seasons,” said Velasquez.

With growing interest in the sport, the field hockey team is bigger and better than ever and are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs.
