Dispatch: Weathering The Storm

by Drew Scott ‘20

March 13th. It has officially been one month since schools have been announced closed. Originally, I thought it would only last 2 weeks, like Governor Hogan said. But as the number of cases in Maryland rose and rose, I began to accept the fact that we weren’t going back to school anytime soon. As the days pass on and on, it begins to feel as though time blends together, days losing significance. Alongside the lack of structure and general motivation, President Trump’s response to the situation only makes my emotional state worse. It becomes increasingly clear to me that not only is the problem with our reaction to the situation our current leader, but possibly the entire system as a whole.

However, I don’t want to make things more depressing than need be. I feel that I’ve finally begun to adjust to the lack of structure. My sleep schedule has become quite disorganised, though, which I do plan on fixing. Online classes have been somewhat stressful, due to the sheer amount of work given all at once, but I’ve been managing it quite well. Luckily, all the spare time I have has helped me complete video games quite quickly. I’m also grateful for how much more time is spent with my friends, both from Sherwood and outside of school. Don’t worry, though, all that time spent is virtual. Despite the inherent trauma of living through a major historical event, I’ve still been working on ways to stay positive. I’m finally able to do school work at my own pace, which I enjoy greatly. I’ve also set aside more time for taking care of myself and generally relaxing more. At least, relaxing as much as I can during this stressful time.

For many of us, myself included, things are hard right now. I hope that at the very least, you are staying safe and healthy as we all weather this storm together.
