Girls Varsity Field Hockey Falls to Whitman in Double Overtime

by Jenna Timmons ’21

Going into the game, girls varsity field hockey knew their match against Whitman was going to be a tough one.  Sherwood started off the game strong with senior Radhika Abeywickrama scoring the first goal of the game and later scoring Sherwood’s second goal in a matter of minutes. Later, Whitman scored, ending the first half 2-1 in Sherwood’s favor.

Going into the second half, the teams went back and forth, fighting hard. With fifteen minutes left in the game, Whitman tied it up 2-2, and the game went into overtime. Whitman had some tough shots on goal during overtime, but the Warriors’ defense cleared them out. In the second overtime, Whitman scored with about four minutes to claim the victory.

Even though it was a frustrating loss, the Warriors were proud of how they played. They are keeping their hopes high for an upcoming game against B-CC at home on October 19, which is expected to be an even tougher match and will be a great way to prepare for playoffs. “I think we are going to do really well in playoffs. I think we showed that last night [Whitman game],” said junior Paige Snyder.
