The boys’ basketball team pulled out an impressive victory over rival Springbrook, 62-58, on Thursday night, bringing their record for the season to 6-4. The win came on the home court of a Springbrook team that had been 8-1 up to that point. After struggling at times this season, the Warriors have now won two straight games against quality opponents (defeating Blake by 16 points the previous week) and four of their last five overall, including a 2-point win over a talented, 7-3 Kennedy squad.

The Warriors are led in scoring by senior guard Xavier McCants (at 15.4 points per game), followed by senior center Hunter Moore and junior guard Tyrese Williams, who both average double figures. Junior guard Shawn Bliss has also provided a substantial offensive boost, hitting the second-most three-pointers on the team behind McCants. “We started [the season] a little slow but are getting on a roll now. Our last game [against Springbrook] was big because it gave us a game lead for first in the division. Things are looking great for the rest of the season” said Bliss. “We have a lot of chemistry, and we know that if one person messes up, we have four other people on the court that have our back. I believe we can make a big run … into the playoffs and up to the state championship game.”

In the next three games, the Warriors will have an opportunity to avenge two of their losses this season, against an undefeated Richard Montgomery team on Tuesday and then against Paint Branch, who beat the Warriors on a buzzer-beater in December, the following Monday (with sub-.500 Northwest in between).
