NFL Week 2 – Kirk Goes Crazy
By Stephen Luckey ’15
After the game-ending injury of quarterback Robert Griffin III in the 41-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Redskins had to make a move and make it fast. The backup Quarterback Kirk Cousins was able to deliver great passes to only back up receivers and a backup tight end. Cousins stepped in and lit it up immediately with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Fullback Darrel Young. After that he threw a 2-yard fade in the end zone for another touchdown to back up tight end Niles Paul. Paul replaced Jordan Reed due to injury and led the team in receiving yards with 99 yards. He was a key component to the victory over the Jaguars and so was Running Back Alfred Morris with his two rushing touchdowns. Cousins did not back down and showed his true potential as a starting quarterback. The fans have always been hyped up on RG3 (excluding this season) but based on this past game, Cousins is the smartest choice for number one on the depth chart. He threw for 250 passing yards and two passing touch downs with only three and a half quarters of play time. Cousins is no doubt a better pocket passer than Griffin, and has consistency when getting the ball up the field. While Griffin is out, the Redskins coaches have some thinking to do as to who will have the “keys to the franchise” as head coach Jay Gruden likes to say.
