No Bull Challenge Raising Awareness About Teen Bullying

By Alec Perez ‘14

Founded by Shawn Marie Edgington “The Great American No Bull Challenge” is a nationwide competition between high school students. After her 16-year-old daughter was cyberbullied and stalked for numerous years Edgington pledged to raise awareness about bullying. The challenge is to create either a 40 second public service announcement or a 3 minute video about bullying. The purpose of the video is to inform people that bullying is very harmful to teens self esteem and can ultimately cause students many problems in their life.

Health teacher Mathew Parsons is having his health classes participate in the competition. Parsons is having the students submit their videos to the No Bull website so that they have a chance to be chosen as the top video out of all the videos submitted.

“The purpose of the video is to show teens how bullying effects kids. Many kids can be severely damaged both physically and mentally from bullies. The competition is a good way for students to get involved with raising awareness about teen bullying,” said Parsons.

The students who participate in the competition enter their video on the website nobullchallenge.org. The 25 most-viewed videos are reviewed by Edgington and others who helped in founding the challenge. Of the 25 videos, the judges pick the best three.

The top three videos can receive up to 2 prestigious Stand up Awards for each award winning film/PSA, mentorship by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch – $2k text-a-tip program for the winner’s school donated by Guest Assist Campus, a custom one of a kind NO BULL signet ring donated by Balfour, video cameras, scholarships, a trip to the Sundance Film Festival, where the winning short film video will be submitted, and 2 VIP tickets to the Teen Choice Awards, including one-night hotel accommodation.
