MCPS to Possibly Add Extra Make-Up Day Due to Snow

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) may be adding one extra to the end of the year to compensate for the five snow days there have been so far, though February 12. The county has four days built in for weather emergencies. The county website says that if there have been 5 days missed due to emergency weather conditions, and extra day, June 13, will be added to the end of the ear. If tomorrow’s forecast holds true, another day, June 16, would also be added.

Though the county has the ability to appeal snow days, like what happened in 2010, when 11 snow days were called and the state went into emergency mode, it is unlikely that the county will receive any waiver this year.

“It’s usually easier if there’s been a state-wide weather emergency,” said Dana Tofig, a spokesperson for the county, in a Washington Post article on February 6.

In addition to Montgomery’s five snow days, neighboring counties have exceeded their snow day limits. According to the Washington Post article, Frederick County had seven snow days, Fairfax has had eight, and Baltimore City has had five.

Montgomery County only has plans for five to nine snow days, with any more than nine requiring an appeal to get a waiver.
