Shanghai Chinese, Offers Euphoria for the Taste Buds

By Jack McCallister ’15

When entering the little Chinese restaurant right off Morningwood drive, one will see a few small tables and flickering light in the corner. However, don’t let its appearance faze you, because Shanghai Chinese offers some of the best oriental cuisine in the area. While other Chinese restaurants in the area such as Hunan Delight do not deliver, Shanghai delivers amazing Chinese food promptly right to your front door.

At first sight the chicken fried rice looks less appealing due to the fact it is served in a Styrofoam box instead of the original Chinese box. But it only takes one bite of this mouthwatering delight to discover how delicious it actually is. The sides at Shanghai are as good as it gets – dumplings, spring rolls, egg rolls, egg drop soup, all cooked to perfection. Compare that to Hunan Delight and it’s easy to see why Shanghai is worth the few extra bucks.

One item on the menu to avoid at Shanghai is the shrimp, which is cold and soggy. It is drenched in a spicy sauce that isn’t very hot. The only good part about the dish is the broccoli and other assorted side vegetable.

As for the appetizers, Shanghai’s steak on stick are addictive. The steak is marinated and seared around the edges, sitting in a bath of beefy juices. The meat isn’t too tough or too soft, and the generous portion can fill eaters up before they even touch their entrée.

Variety is not a problem at Shanghai because the restaurant offers almost anything one could think of. The menu consists of various platters, sides and dishes. There is no need to worry about not getting enough food; a large quantity can be expected in each dish. Even the appetizers are filling.

In addition to the great tasting food, the friendly staff will always be ready to tell their favorite choice even for orders over the phone.

In order to really taste the best of what Olney has to offer, Shanghai Chinese is a must. From tangy lamb to a vegetable sauté, it is guaranteed Shanghai Chinese will have something that will satisfy a craving for quality Chinese food.
