Stand Proud

Stand Proud, a club that consists of LGBT students and their allies, strives to promote community and social awareness of LGBT issues at Sherwood. Every Wednesday at lunch, around 20 students gather in room K279 to share their stories. They are supported by peers who know, understand and respect what they are going through.

Stand Proud is sponsored by science teacher Mary Baker and the club president is junior Alex Hanson. “It is a space where I can be surrounded by people who love and support me and my community,” said Hanson.

To celebrate October’s LGBT History Month, Stand Proud will spend their meetings educating members about monumental events in the LGBT community that are not taught in class. “You don’t have to be gay to join Stand Proud; you just have to be a good person. Everyone should join,” encouraged Hanson.
