Huck Resigns

Dear Warrior Staff:

This is my formal notification of resignation as the Advisor of The Warrior newspaper. Upon acceptance of this resignation by the 2012-2013 Warrior staff, my last day will be June 9, 2013, or earlier if a suitable replacement is found.

I appreciate the opportunities I have been given in my twelve years in this position. More profoundly, I have greatly cherished the relationships I have developed with more than 200 students who have been members of the Warrior staff during my tenure as advisor. I know that I have become a better educator and mentor, and a better human being, because of my experiences in the service of Sherwood’s first-rate newspaper.

As President Truman famously noted, “the buck stops here” with the person ultimately in charge. The best leaders credit those that they lead when there are successes, and take the responsibility and blame when there are failures. In rare instances when actions are so badly botched that they lead to a catastrophic debacle, mere words of apology are insufficient. Resignation is the appropriate response.

On the night of February 7, I led nine courageous Warrior staff members into a contest of Dodgeball against members of the Yearbook. Cavalierly, I did nothing to ensure that my unit was adequately prepared for the field of battle. Proving incapable of keeping a cool head under fire, I arrogantly put myself at unnecessary risk in trying to catch any and every ball thrown in my direction. This folly in tactics led to me being carried from the field prematurely, only to watch helplessly as my young charges bravely struggled on in my absence. The blame for the resulting defeat against an inferiorly armed adversary rests solely and heavily on my shoulders alone.

It has been an honor to serve as the advisor of The Warrior for the entirety of the 21st Century thus far, and I am sure that the great traditions of this scholastic publication will continue for generations to come after my departure. Victus honor.

Sincerely,

Peter Huck
