Golf

by Joey Lavoie ’14

Sherwood Warriors golf is currently 12-6 and is averaging 234 strokes per match. In Sherwood’s last match they shot a 232.8. Senior Tommy Nakamura is leading the charge with a 43.3 stroke average.

“We had a good season and were very competitive. We played very hard all season and that’s reflected in our 12-6 record in our division. This puts us tied for third this year. We were lead all year by senior Tommy Nakamura who has been an excellent leader for our younger players and our most consistent player. We also had a solid contribution from our up and coming freshman Parker Phillips. At Districts we did our best and struggled with the awful weather and conditions as did many players and teams. We had two players qualify for the Montgomery County Invitational they are Tommy Nakamura and Griffin Paquin. The highlight of Districts was the hole in one by Griffin Paquin on hole 3 at Poolesville Golf Course,” said Coach Chad Beswick.

The golf team has one remaining match left on October 17, at Rattlewood Golf Course; this is the MCPS District Championship.

Girl’s Field Hockey

by Brendan Cudd ’14

Sherwood Field Hockey team’s current record is  5-3. On September 20 the field hockey team lost to Springbrook by a score of 7-2. Then on September 23 Sherwood had a hard-fought victory over Blair 2-0. With the boost of confidence from the win over Blair, the team played even harder against Northwest and had an outstanding win 4-0.  Then the hot streak continued and Sherwood beat Blake 4-1. The team had an unfortunate turn of events and lost to Paint Branch 1-0.

“Emily Kenul has had a big impact on this team-with assists and scoring, as well as playing defense. She has the endurance to last the whole game and supports her teammates no matter where the ball is. Alex Mazzeo, Courtney Martin and Emily Kenul are the highest scoring players on the team. Abby Isaacs (goalie) has been playing extremely well only allowing one goal in the last three games. Positives [are] the team is smaller this year than last but that seems to have the opposite effect on the girls, they have the attitude of ‘bring it on’ when faced with tough teams as opposed to being concerned. They work hard at practice and expect to win every game. They are mentally tough and support each other on the field,” said Coach Morse.

Field hockey next plays October 10 against rival Magruder at 7 p.m., and then hosts Northwood on October 12.  Sherwood also plays at Einstein on October 18 at 7 p.m.

Girl’s Tennis

by Jamie Langbein ’13

The lady Warriors plan to end their season strong with an away game today (10/13) against Seneca Valley.

Freshman Kaitlyn Heo has done a phenomenal job this season as Sherwood’s number 1 single. She has played some of the top girls in the county and held her ground against Wootton’s Megan Han, who is reported to be the best tennis player in all of Montgomery County.

“So far this season we have been lucky enough to have an incredible new freshman on our team who has done a great job as our number 1 singles. We were also able to beat Poolesville to secure a spot in division one again for next year,” said sophomore Erin Ryan.

The team has the county tournament which is equivalent to other teams’ playoffs starting on the 20.

Girl’s Volleyball

by Hope Gouterman ’13

“Winning states last year has definitely set the standards high and everyone is gunning for us. The team has become more confident but we also have all become a lot more careful and determined. We have no room to take this season lightly, we have to work every day, every chance we get. Every minute counts because absolutely nothing will be handed to us,” said senior Sydney West.

Girl’s volleyball continues their winning streak, going strong with a 7-0 record. Upcoming games are against Paint Branch, Gaithersburg, and Walter Johnson. These games will be played away at 6:30 p.m.
