Sherwood Captures Fourth Straight State Title

Another year, another championship for the softball squad, as the team won its 83rd consecutive game as well as its fourth-consecutive state title Saturday night at College Park against the Northwest Jaguars, 4-0. The performance, which was witnessed by hundreds of attendees at the Maryland Softball Complex, was representative of their entire season, for the pitching was dominant and the offense, led by senior Nicole Stockinger, was steady.

Junior Jamie Schmier was on the mound for the Warriors and, like she has been all postseason, was dominant, pitching a perfect game into the sixth inning and not running into any real trouble until the final frame. Schmier emerged as the staff ace this season, compiling an impressive 15 shutouts in 20 games.

The offense was aided by senior Julie Swarr who, in her final game, notched an RBI double, driving home junior leftfielder Marisa Mancini who had doubled previously that inning. An error and wild pitch by Northwest additionally provided Sherwood with more runs, as the team went on to tally up four total runs in the game.

The win is especially sweet for seniors Stockinger and Swarr, who can now both say that they are the only players in Maryland history to have never lost a softball game in their four years on varsity. Swarr and Stockinger, who has committed to play at Towson, will go down as two of the key cogs in Sherwood’s dynasty.
