The indoor track team have had a tough time placing above 10th in recent competitions. The team needs to use these tough times as a positive motivator and believe in their evident ability to qualify for the State Championship. To qualify, they need to earn a place in the top 4 at Regionals on February 9.

On January 14, the team competed in the Montgomery Invitational at Prince George’s Sports Complex. Seniors Cole Leacock, Renaldo Smith, Anthony Jones, and Brian Whaley led the boys to 10th out of 17 for the 4X400 meter relay. Sophomore Kelsey Laich, senior Kiana Robinson, sophomore Fatima Koroma, and junior Alina Remond earned 12th place out of 16 for the 4X400 meter relay.

The team next competed in the County Championships on January 18. The girls got three points, placing 18th out of 22 teams in the Championships. The team earned 6th place in the 4X800 meter relay by junior Amelia Guenterberg, junior Leah Peloff, sophomore Megan Kendall, and senior Genevieve Zillich. The boys did not get any points at this meet.

The next meet is the Regional Finals on February 9. Northwest is expected to come out on top of the 17 competing schools. Sherwood boys are expected to place well in the 4X4 Relay, and the girls are expected to place well in the 4X8 Relay.

Senior Rhiem Allen said “ We have to work hard everyday in practice. Sprinters need to improve their times if we want to make it to States, but everyone needs to improve a little bit everyday in order for us to be the best”.
