Sherwood Hires Gilchrist as Basketball Coach

More than a month after varsity basketball coach Dondrell Whitmore submitted his resignation, the school chose a new coach, Tim Gilcrhist, on May 17.
“Whitmore sent an email to me with his resignation in April. The job was posted for two weeks during which an applicant pool was collected. A committee of representatives from administration, athletics and other teachers reviewed 30 applicants and narrowed it down to four or five candidates,” explained Athletic Director Kathy Green. Green noted that the committee included former coaches, parents and players.
Whitmore coached at Sherwood for seven years, capturing the State Championship title in his first season with a victory over Magruder in 2007, and the team won the 4A North Region in 2012.
Gilchrist, who graduated from Sherwood, has plenty of coaching experience, mostly at his alma mater. Currently a physical education teacher and former boys’ JV basketball coach at Paint Branch, he contributed to the Sherwood athletic program as the coach of the girls’ volleyball team, leading the club to its first 4A State title in 2006. Gilchrist previously served as Sherwood’s golf coach as well.
