Mike Bonavia (left) has been named Sherwood's new football coach.

The Sherwood Warriors have found their new football coach. Mike Bonavia accepted the job earlier Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation at the Sandy Spring school on who would be named the perennial powerhouse’s newest coach.

Bonavia will leave Einstein High School where he served as head coach for five years and before that, at Richard Montgomery (RM) for 11 years.

Bonavia is known as a “fixer-upper” of sorts. He took two losing programs at Einstein and RM and turned them into programs on the rise. The Einstein Titans boasted a 5-5 record in their final season under Bonavia; five more wins than they had the four seasons prior to his arrival.

Bonavia served as an assistant coach under former Sherwood coach Al Thomas at Seneca Valley, before leaving for his first head coaching position at RM in 1995.

The Sherwood administration is expected to make an official announcement of the position Monday morning.
