Girl’s Volleyball

Girl’s volleyball is set to play in the state final game at Ritchie Coliseum Saturday November 19 at 5 pm against Arundel High School. The lady warrior’s defeated Paint Branch, Blake, Dulaney, and Richard Montgomery in order to win the region and qualify themselves for another chance to win the state finals.

“Sherwood came out firing early and often, putting down some thunderous kills, big blocks, and spectacular defense. Please come out to support our Warriors volleyball as they look to continue their undefeated season and earn a trip to States at Ritchie Coliseum (UMD),” said head coach Brian McCarty.

The girls will hopefully pull out another win to go in the books. With a team of true athletes and pure talent, they will surely give it there all, and will try to succeed.

Girl’s Soccer

Girls’ varsity soccer played their first playoff game against Westminster at Blair High School on October 27. After two overtimes, the team suffered a crushing defeat in penalty kicks, 4-3. Junior Hope Gouterman had a goal during regulation off of a corner kick and another goal off of a free kick, which was not counted in overtime because the referee determined there was obstruction of the goalie, a shaky call that devastated the team.

“Our season this year was better than last year not only because we won more games, but because we had a great group of dedicated girls. It was a shame that we lost our playoff game, but the score did not reflect how hard we played and how much we improved from last season. Although we didn’t win the playoff game, our season was by far the best Sherwood girls’ soccer has had in a while” said junior defender Amanda Pustis.

The scoring leaders after the season ended were Gouterman with 12 goals and 10 assists, junior Becca Dunwoody with 10 goals and four assists, and Lauren Wood with seven goals and three assists.

Cross Country

The boys and girls teams qualified for the MPSSAA State Championships by placing second in their respective races in the MPSSAA 4A North Cross Country Championship on November 3. The girls scored 59 points to first place Dulaney’s 40 and were led by sophomore Grace McDonald who placed third in the race and senior Jacqueline Weiss who placed seventh. The boys scored 47 points to Dulaney’s 35. They were led by senior Matt Stitzlein who finished fourth and junior Dustin Kang who placed sixth. Other runners who participated in this meet are seniors Nick Johnson, Michael Wagner, Michael Traynor and Caroline McCue, juniors Dereje Alemu, Vik Siberry, Gillian Tosatto, Ariel Mahlmnann, and Amanda Tomlinson, and freshman Stacey O’Neale. The cross country season ended with the Maryland State Championships on November 12. It was a three mile course with grass and dirt trails with rolling hills.  The boys placed eighth of 24 teams and the girls placed eleventh of 21 teams. Dustin Kang led the boys and placed twenty fifth and Grace McDonald led the girls and placed eighteenth.

“Watching our juniors and seniors dedicate themselves to a great season in the memory of Alex Popeck and proving that dedication works was the highlights of this season,” recalled Coach Dan Reeks.
