Swim Team Steps Up to Division One
by Savannah Greaney ’21
The Sherwood swim team has long been one of the school’s most successful sports, winning Regionals and States for many years in a row. This year is going to be an exciting year for the team considering it is their first year being in Division One. In the new season, the team will be going against top teams such as BCC, Walter Johnson, and Churchill, ones they normally only went up against in the big meets, such as Regionals and States, will now be their competition nearly every weekend.
The team has many new swimmers this year due to the fact that less cuts were made during tryouts. Their new coach this year, Ryan Burnsky, anticipates that because of the tougher competition, it will better prepare the swimmers for the meets that are at the end of the year. Burnsky also states that “…as long as they reach their individual and team goals they set for themselves, it will count as a successful year.” As well as having new team members, many exceptional swimmers, some of the best in the area, graduated last year. It will be a challenge for new swimmers to step up and take leadership but so far things are looking great.
The Sherwood swim team begun their season going against Poolesville and Churchill. The girls won a close meet against Poolesville but lost 127-58 to Churchill. As for the boys, they lost both meets, although they were extremely close to winning against Poolesville.
For the remainder of the season, the team has a real chance to do well now that they have gotten more of an idea of what their upcoming competition will be like in the dual meets. Sherwood’s swim team is extremely motivated and will continue to prove that they are one of the best swim teams in the county. This is only the beginning to a very exciting and eventful season
