The Olney community was shaken when news arose of 2018 Sherwood High School graduate Kathleen Rosendall and University of Maryland student being diagnosed with Leukemia. Rosendall made a huge influence around her and especially in the music department at Sherwood. When community members learned of Rosendall’s illness they looked for ways to help with the costs of her treatment. Proceeds from Rock and Roll Revival posters were donated towards her Go Fund Me page. Another fundraising activity, “Backyard Bash” occured on Saturday, June 1, and the entry fee money went towards the funds for Rosendall’s treatment. Students from all over, and from different grade levels, came together to support a fellow community member in need.

As the crowds started to roll in around 8 p.m., the organizers knew it would be a huge success. The evening kicked off with an upbeat and exciting set from local band, Sounds and Haptics. The following performers included Jeff Draco, One Night Band, Lucy Kuchma, and Moran Street, who all live in the Olney area and know Kathleen personally in some way.

“We were really happy with the huge turnout. It was great to see such a large number of people supporting one of my best friends,” said friend and fundraiser organizer, Lucas King. The group also provided food to attendees, consisting of burgers, salads, and sweet treats. With not only a five dollar entrance fee per person, but numerous extra donations throughout the night, Backyard Bash proved to be a great way of raising money to support the Rosendall family through tough, emotionally draining times in a fun and music-filled way.
