Teacher Leaves Sherwood at Start of School Year
by Rebecca Stussman ’12
“I don’t really see myself as being gone. I hope that people will be happy with my professional change, but I still plan to be a part of the school and come to events. I’m going to miss people, but I do believe that I really am needed somewhere else,” said Donna Thomas, who ended her third year at Sherwood prematurely on September 9 after teaching multiple computer science classes, designing class curriculums and sponsoring five computer-oriented clubs including women in technology and game club.
During her time here at Sherwood, Thomas was a strong proponent of the importance of technology education and advocated greatly about the necessity of more computer-capable professionals in the workplace. Prior to her time at Sherwood, Thomas taught for two years at Northwood High School in MCPS, before which she worked in computer programming, management and sales at multiple technology-focused companies. She is leaving Sherwood for a job as the senior director of an American-owned, multi-billion dollar company that is a subsidiary of Xerox and whose name Thomas is not ready to disclose.
“I got a phone call from a friend who says that she really needed me and that I was the only one for the job. I have been out of the industry for 4 years and my expertise is still needed elsewhere. This calling came at a time in my life where I believe I have done what I came here to do so I am going to the next place where I’m needed,” said Thomas of her decision to depart from Sherwood. Her new job, which Thomas starts on the 19th, will involve travel, management and design. Thomas looks forward to playing a role in the development of new, innovative creations and also to collecting an increased salary and benefits package that would not be available to her as a teacher.
“It’s been three years with no pay raises, and yet we’ve been told that we have to contribute more and more to our pensions and healthcare. In the past three years, not one teacher has been rewarded for her service,” said Thomas. “Teaching is a noble profession, and I feel incredibly blessed that I was able to do that; [however] I don’t want to have to work until I’m 78-years-old, which I’d have to do as a teacher. I never believe I’ll be sitting still after I retire, but I am going to be enjoying my retirement and doing things that I like to do.”
Though September 9 was Thomas’ last day, she will remain available to students for advice, friendship and as a guest speaker during technology clubs and classes. She encourages students to Facebook friend or email her and looks forward to continuing her relationship with Sherwood as an outsider contributor of our open community.
