Following an impressive indoor season that saw several athletes compete in the state meet, the track and field team will look forward to a productive and successful outdoor campaign. Despite the loss of a number of key seniors from last year, the team has high hopes for this season.
On the boys’ side, seniors Jarrett Harman, Spencer Staub and David Zavala will form the nucleus of the distance squad. Juniors Owen Miller and Jefferson Ruiz will also fulfill significant roles. Additionally, junior sprinter Rufus Settles will be a key component.
On the girls’ side, junior Lauren Woods, junior Tiffany Woods, senior Grace McDonald, junior Molly Hierholzer, sophomore Alyssa Moran and sophomore Maddie Peloff will all return from strong performances at the indoor state meet with high expectations for the upcoming season. In particular, the 4 by 400 meter relay of the Woods twins, McDonald and Hierholzer has the potential for outstanding season.
“Personally, I hope to focus in on my form and nutrition—two things I learned during indoor that can really improve performance,” said Hierholzer. “I’m a middle distance runner, which can be hard as I work both endurance and speed during workouts … We have so much upside, and I know with strong leadership and dedication we will go far this year.” The team opens the season on March 26 against Paint Branch and Good Counsel.
