Cross Country Gears Up for States on a High Note
by Dylan Lewis ‘27
After a tough end to their 2025 campaign, especially for the boys who finished just 7 points short of first place, the cross country program looks to close out strong after a stellar regular season and a solid county championship performance. On November 4, the team looks to take the next step at the regional championship, where both the boys and girls varsity teams have the opportunity to qualify for states.
At the MCPS County Championship on October 17 at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, the boys varsity team’s performance was the major headline. Junior Dimitri Rementelas led the way, taking first place, timing at 15 minutes and 50 seconds. The next highest finisher was senior Caleb Charmatz at 21st place, who ran a personal best time of 17 minutes and 11 seconds. Just behind Charmatz were juniors Avery Smith (24th place, 17 minutes and 14 seconds) and Alexander Zirkelbach (25th place, 17 minutes and 17 seconds). The boys team finished with an overall score of 118, earning them a highly respectable spot in second place. As for the girls, they finished in thirteenth place, with a final score of 352. Freshman Kara Pruitt finished the highest for the team in 41st place, running a personal best of 21 minutes and 38 seconds.
“Despite multiple injuries … the girls should make states this year,” said senior captain Treyson Goode. As for the boys side, “[Winning the state championship] would mean a lot given how hard we have worked for it and how close we got to winning last year.” With multiple weeks to prepare before regionals, the team looks to rest up before taking on the course at Lake Needwood. Consistent improvement and high marks for both the boys and girls has been the story this season, and the program should have no problem readjusting and resetting before regionals even if some runners stay sidelined.
To close out the regular season, the team found themselves in a groove that they seek to carry into the regional and state championships. On September 23, the Warriors kicked things off on a high note at Rockville, taking on Northwest and the Rams. On the boys side, Dimitri Rementelas and Smith took first and second place, respectively. Rementelas finished with a top time of 16 minutes and 28 seconds, while Smith finished 25 seconds behind, completing 3 miles in 16 minutes and 53 seconds. The girls also performed well, with sophomore Katherine Dhingra taking second place timing at 22 minutes and 25 seconds. Freshman Kara Pruitt took third place, completing the race in 23 minutes and 8 seconds.
The team later ran at the Oatlands Invitational on September 26. Key performances came from Dimitri and Yianni Rementelas in the Boys Varsity “A” group. Dimitri Rementales finished in fifth place (timing at 15 minutes and 52 seconds), while Yianni Rementelas took seventh place (timing at 16 minutes and 8 seconds) out of a total of 619 runners.
