Hockey Looks to Rebound

by Chase Sondike ‘26

After suffering a 4-1 loss in their most recent outing against Wootton, the hockey team aims to get back on track this Friday against B-CC. The Warriors currently sit on a 2-2 record, nearing the halfway point of the season. They look to regroup the last two games of the first half before winter break.

The Warriors on ice have shown flashes of excellence thus far in the season after shocking top-seeded Churchill 4-3 in the season opener. Ever since then, however, the team has been inconsistent, losing to Whitman 3-1 and, most recently, Wootton 4-1. The team has struggled offensively and strives to start tallying more goals to reduce the workload on the back end.

Despite struggling lately, the team has a lot of potential, and they are aware of it. One of the team’s captains, senior Cam Calandro, has provided a spark for the team, both on and off the ice. “My goal as a captain is to make sure everyone is prepared before, during, and after the game,” said Calandro. “I always talk to get everyone fired up in the locker room and in the huddles before the game.” Calandro serves as a model to the younger players, conveying his experience and extensive knowledge of the game.

The team’s potential was shown in their thriller win over Churchill, yet they are relying on a turnaround in their season after dropping 2 of their last 3. Their goals, however, remain the same. “The goal for this season is to make a deep run into the state playoffs,” Calandro simply put it.

The goaltending for the Warriors has been one thing that has been extremely stellar despite the team’s inconsistencies. A sophomore transfer from private school, St. John’s Aidan Pesek has been a bright spot for the team. The transfer has been netminding admirably, allowing only around an average of 2 goals a game. The Warriors hope to keep the steady goaltending up while also turning up offensively, as they have been stagnant as of late.

Calandro spoke to what the team has been able to do well so far. “The strengths of Sherwood hockey lie within the teamwork and chemistry between everyone. One of the main reasons we have been able to find success is our elite goaltending.”

Looking ahead to their face-off against B-CC this Friday, the Warriors should come out on top. The Barons have been struggling to get on track since the regular season began, and remain winless still. The Warriors on ice are hoping for a resurgence in their season and to start tallying some wins together as a team.
