Girls Varsity Soccer Kicks Off Season With Drastically Changed Team
by Emma Link ’27 and Molly Schecter ‘27
As the regular season gets going, girls varsity soccer continues to make adjustments to improve the team’s all-around qualities. An added challenge, but also an opportunity, is that several key starters from last season graduated. As a result, the majority of the starting lineup consists of juniors and seniors.
Senior midfielder Abby Sorkin says that the roster turnover from last has not been a significant problem. “Our team did not have an issue and players stepped up and filled their roles,” she said. The Warriors got off to the right start, defeating Seneca Valley by a score of 5-0, before falling to Blair 2-0. Although a loss, the results against Blair may still be a step in a good direction as the team lost to Blair 5-1 last season.
This past Monday, the team faced Rockville, defeating them 2-0. With the team dominating possession the whole game, sophomore Emma Link gets the opportunity to dribble beyond Rockville’s backline to score and give Sherwood the 1-0 lead. Things later got hectic as sophomore Yasmin Sheikh gets shoved by the Rockville goalie in the box who then received a yellow card. The refs then unfollowed their call by giving the kick to Rockville rather than properly awarding a penalty kick to Sherwood. The bizarre decision by the ref caused coaches, players, and observers in the stands to arise and yell. Fortunately, the incident didn’t affect the ultimate outcome, and senior captain Abby Sorkin solidified the win with an impressive goal from 40 yards out.
The girls have had a busy week, culminating in a game against rival Magruder on Friday. Senior midfielder, and captain, Peyton Wiliams has hope that they can defeat Magruder, stating that, “every player has the mindset to keep working to reach the level we want.”
