Sherwood Swimmers Compete at Metros

The Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Competition (Metros) is an annual  swim and dive meet that took place February 9-12, and many schools and their athletes attend. Sherwood is no exception to this as they brought plenty of swimmers and divers. This year Metros were hosted at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center.

The first day on Wednesday, February 9,  was all about boys diving. Senior Max Weinrich had an amazing diving performance during this meet and scored a 578.40 in the one meter diving event in which he placed first out of 38 other divers. Weinrich came within twenty points of the all-time record that was set in 2015. 

Thursday was the second day and consisted of girls diving where junior Lilia Atanda placed 6th overall out of 45 other students from across the D.C. Metro area. Her final score was 410.75, coming just shy of fifth place.

Friday held the 500 and 400 freestyle prelims where junior Lucas Quiroga placed 23rd in the boys 500 yard event, having a final prelim time of 4:51.91 and coming within a second of qualifying for the finals. Junior Logan Fecko finished with a time of 5:09.77, coming in 47th behind some of the best swimmers in the area. Sophomore Adrianna Caponiti placed 9th out of twenty swimmers in the girls 500 yard freestyle event, swimming at a time of 5:05.95 in prelims and 5:10.59 in the finals. Additionally, senior Jaycie Boyle swam a time of 5:39.67 in the 500 yard freestyle.

The fourth day was split into two parts, which were prelims except for 500 and 400 meter freestyle relays. These races took place in the morning. Many Sherwood swimmers participated in this portion of the meet including senior Emma Dorsey who placed 14th in the 100 yard butterfly event with a time of 58.97. Freshman Justin Lasko also joined in on the racing Saturday morning, swimming in the 100 yard freestyle event and finishing with a time of 50.94. Sherwoods 200 yard relay team, consisting of senior Kyde Savage, sophomore Mark Williams, freshman David Mutter, and sophomore Devin Kosiorowski, came in 28th right behind Bullis, who were only 0.04 seconds faster.

In the evening of Saturday, the swimming finals were held. Senior Katherine Wade had an outstanding performance coming with an 8th place in the finals for the 100 yard breast stroke. Also, the boys 200 Yard Medley relay, consisting of junior Bryan Kim, sophomore Brain Wilbur, junior Lucas Quiroga, and freshman Justin Lasko, placed 18th in the finals with a time of 1:40.35.
