Saturday, October 30 was the MCPS Cheer County Competition. Out of these teams, seven went for the division one crown. Among these teams was Sherwood High School’s Varsity Cheerleading Team. The team of 13 competing girls not only put on an entertaining show but displayed skilled athleticism and stamina through their countless stunts and tumbling.

Sherwood’s Cheer team, known to put on incredible cheers and stunts on the sidelines, began practicing for their competition season at the beginning of September. After about two months the team was ready to put their two and a half minute routine on the floor.

The practices proved to pay off after having a routine where they “hit,” therefore making it flawless. This performance caused them to score a 124.05, coming in second place to Winston Churchill High School who scored a 124.4 with an exceptional routine as well.

Sherwood’s amazing routine takes them into Regionals in third place against Winston Churchill Highschool in first place and South River High School from Anne Arundel County in second place. As they prepare for the next round, Sherwood is ensuring that they will be even more of a contender as they are adding more tumbling and more stunts to their new routine. These new moves during Regionals will absolutely make Sherwood more difficult to compete with.

The Sherwood Cheer Team was not the only group that brought home an award on Saturday. At Counties, the Student Section along with Sherwood Poms helped Sherwood win the Spirit Award: the first in a decade.
