Golf Advances to States

The Sherwood golf team had a very strong regular season campaign, placing first or second in 4 of their 5 matches. Led by junior Bryan Kim and senior co-captain Scott Ervin – who were able to consistently average a single digit handicap – (less than 41 shots in 9 holes) Sherwood achieved a ranking of second in the county. The regular season was a good time for the team to get tournament-like practice, as its main purpose was only to create seeding for the district tournament in Poolesville on October 4th, not having any impact on which schools would qualify for the State competition.

As a result, Sherwood needed to perform well in the districts in order to qualify for States, and they did just that. Bryan Kim led the team, securing first place in the event by shooting a six-under 65 for 18 holes. However, high school golf is not an individual sport, and it took great performances from junior Theo Mavrikes, junior Drew Stahley, junior Tyler Lynch, and Scott Ervin for Sherwood to place third overall and qualify for the State tournament.

Senior co-captain Ansh Rekhi believes that their key to success were the golfers putting in hard work during the offseason to improve consistency. “The team’s great chemistry created a strong bond for the team on and off the field,” said Rekhi.

Coach Thomas Nakamura is emphasizing that the team has to, “keep grinding,” and “working hard” to do well in the State tournament. Both Rekhi and Nakamura believe that the team has a solid chance at taking the State tournament if they play well.

Sherwood will compete in the State tournament at UMD golf course on October 25 and will look to earn the School’s first title in over 20 years.
