‘Extraction’ Provides A Good Distraction

by Graham Skinker ’21

With all the craziness going on in the world recently, Netflix’s newest original provides a good distraction for viewers. That is if you enjoy movies with nonstop action and gunfighting. “Extraction” tells the story of a war-hardened mercenary whose mission turns into a gripping, soul-searching race to survive when he’s hired to rescue a drug lord’s kidnapped son in the streets of Bangladesh.

Joe Russo (writer) and Sam Hargrave (Director) certainly fulfill viewers’ cravings for action. The camerawork throughout the whole movie, but especially during the action scenes, are incredible and the choreography does a good job at making Hemsworth look like a badass killer.

Additionally, Chris Hemsworth puts on an extraordinary performance throughout the film, delivering some incredible lines in the wake of constant action. The movie also does a good job at encompassing some small bits of humor to go with the nonstop action, including one scene in which Hemsworth beats up a group of children who were attempting to carry out a drug lord’s bidding.

If you are someone who enjoys films like the Jason Bourne or John Wick series then this is a movie for you. However the nonstop violence and repetitiveness throughout the movie may be too much for other viewers. The film gets a little too wrapped up in the brutal killing and violence to really develop characters well or incorporate a more intricate plot.

Aside from the lack of plot, the movie is overall well made. The action shots are incredible and allow viewers to still see and understand what is going amid the chaos of it all. Hemsworth delivers one of his best performances on the big screen playing someone other than Thor.
