The 90s Are Back

by Avery Prudenti ’21

The 2000s have been full of low-rise jeans, sparkly shirts, and tank tops, yet recently the 90s have taken back the throne and are now seen on social media apps and in fashion events. Thrift shops are becoming crowded with teens trying to get back the old vintage look. Grunge has specifically become the trend, which has allowed people to be comfortable all while looking stylish and cool.

Tik Tok, a large social media app, with around 60 million people on it, has been a main influence for fashion trends in recent times. From vsco girls to e-girls, Tik Tok has taken the fashion world by storm. Popular creators have their fans copying their every move, hoping to become famous themselves. This has led to a rapid advancement of new trends with everyone running to the thrift shops to follow them. The recent trends have been a more grunge look. Layering flannels, beanies, and fun plaid pants are filling people’s foryou page. The new looks top the old: high rise jeans have overtaken the low-rise jeans, and people layer clothing instead of cutting it–all of which is definitely an improvement. Many of these trends were apparent in Sherwood itself, and TikTok has not only filled hallways with people dancing to songs to get clout, but also in the outfits people wear to school. These trends are an upgrade from the common groutfit (grey outfit) we see, while still being just as comfortable.

2020 Fashion Week furthered this idea with many of its outfits looking like it came straight from the 90s. These trends are a step up from other recent fashion statements, which were far from easy on the eye.

Brandy Meville and Urban Outfitters are some of the brands that are hopping on this trend and helping to bring the grunge look back. They have become increasingly popular with famous influencers such as Emma Chamberlain repping their outfits on instagram. They have helped to bring back mom jeans, flamboyant sunglasses, and other fashion pieces. These stores have adapted to the vastly changing styles and they have done it well, with cool outfits and clothing that would have been all the rage in the 90s.
