Boys’ Basketball Falls Short in Second Round

The boys basketball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday, March 3, in a 72-62 loss to Springbrook, a team that has only lost two games this season and should be considered contenders for the championship.

Sherwood came off of a win in an overtime thriller against Kennedy, 78-77 in the first round of the playoffs. Sherwood looked to continue their momentum into the second round, but were again bested before reaching the third round for the sixth straight year. This loss also marks Sherwood’s second straight year of losing to Springbrook in the playoffs.

“I think we underperformed as a team. We faced a tough Springbrook team in an even tougher environment on the road and at the end did not get the result we wanted,” said junior forward Nick Wilson.

Sherwood started off the first quarter with a competitive run, trailing only 15-13. The Warriors continued their good play into the second quarter, moving the ball around to get open buckets. Springbrook led Sherwood at half by only one point, 27-26. However, the start of the second half is where the Blue Devils showed their real strength. In the third quarter, the difference became larger and larger, as Springbrook started to get on a run that had them up by double digits. Although they continued to play hard, Sherwood unfortunately was not able to come back from the deficit, losing by 10.

Although this season is not exactly what Sherwood wanted, it could be something that they needed. The team was well-rounded this year with a deep rotation full of players who made their impact on the court. The expectations this season were not met, as their 12-10 regular season record was a game worse than last year. Next season, however, Sherwood will only grow stronger with returning players that have played together for nearly three years. With another year of a similar coaching staff, along with the determination of the players to go further in the playoffs, this should be the formula for success next year, as the team hopes to make a heavy push in the postseason.

“Next year, we are going to play better and hopefully not only win our division, but play at the Xfinity Center for states,” said Wilson.
