Outdoor Track Preview

by Aidan Trump ‘21

As the spring season approaches, the track team looks to improve upon their successful 2019 campaign. In last year’s Montgomery County Championships the boys team placed sixth out of 21 teams and the girls placed eighth out of 24 teams.

While most of the individual and relay events have a strong chance of success. This season none look more menacing than the boys 4×200. Last season Jacob Kamara, Eddie Dumas, Ty Williams, and Shimshone Mehlek-Dawveed placed 4th in the MPSSAA Outdoor State Championships, running an incredible 1:28. However, the 4×200 will require new athletes to fill big shoes left by graduates Williams and Mehlek-Dawveed, but Kamara and Dumas are now seniors who have worked hard to improve their previous times. The girls 4×800 looks to be strong, consisting of juniors Olivia Miller, Christy Trang, Emily Gravel, and sophomore Katie Kaneko. Their collective goal for the season is to go to states for the 4×800. In the 2019 outdoor season, their 4×8 team ran a strong 10:00. The girls’ relay has not lost any members since last year. Accordingly, the team will be able to rekindle the same competitive spirit that they had last year. One of the benefits of having all of their members return this season is that “everyone likes each other, we are a lot more connected than last year,” said Kaneko.

Last season Kaneko ran the team’s fastest girls 1,600 at an impressive 5:32.  Senior Sean Enright also stands out in long-distance running a 9:45 in the 3,200, and placing fifth in the MCPS Championships last year. Another athlete deserving of attention is Dumas who ran the best 100-meter dash in the school last season, clocking in at an incredible 11.04.

The Warriors are not just relying on their superb collective spirit, this team has plentiful individual talent. Outdoor track will host their first meet of the year on Saturday, March 21, at 9 a.m.
