Hockey Team Rebuilds in 2019-2020 Season

The Sherwood hockey team, despite what many may believe, is not dead. Heading into the new year with 14 playersfour of which attending Sandy Spring Friends School, making Sherwood a combined teamit seems as if the club’s popularity is declining from years prior. Being a core member of the club, though, I can confidently say that this year is a transition year, meaning that the hockey team will live on.

Thus far, the Warriors have a 2-3 record, beating out only Walter Johnson and Woodrow Wilson in the standings. Whether it be a lack of bodies in the stands or on the bench, the team has entered a ‘survival mode’ of sorts, looking to simply live on another year. With only three seniors and one junior, the team looks to build a group of underclassmen in the coming seasons. “As long as we have a few little kids interested in hockey, we will have the basics of a team,” said sophomore Aidan Sachs. The Warriors know that the team is small in number and in age, but with hard work and dedication, they compete right alongside the other teams, consistently losing close games in the third period, due to over-exhaustion.

Many of the players believe that with five games under their belts, the group is ready to grow as a team. “The team is improving every day as the season goes along,” said sophomore Christian Winckler. Time after time, the Warriors are showing their skills improving, getting shots and rebounds, left and right. Big or small, many or few, the Sherwood hockey team looks to the future of hockey, ready to not only rebuild, but to play their hardest in the current situation. “The season has only just begun … it certainly isn’t over yet, this year or in the coming years,” said freshman Jeremy Issacs.
