Indoor Track Races to Start the Season

The indoor track and field team will compete against 22 other teams in their county meet on Friday at the PG Sportsplex. Overall, the team expects to perform well; however, with all the strong competition, Sherwood might not place in the top three. “I am hopeful that we will start the season strong and close to the top,” said Coach Rebekah Byerly.

After practicing for three weeks, the team stands a chance of placing some individuals. The standouts include junior Olivia Miller for 500 meter dash and 800 meter run, senior Lindsey Moris for 55 meter dash and long jump, senior Jacob Kamara for 300 meter dash and long jump, senior Sean Enright for 3200 meter run, and senior Eddie Dumas III for 55 meter dash and long jump.

Along with the top performers, the whole team has been preparing and working their hardest. “The captains and team seem eager to work and improve, which is a positive sign for positive outcomes,” said Byerly. Sherwood will run two females and two males for the events which follow; 55 meter dash, 55 meter hurdles, 300 meter dash, 500 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 3200 meter run, long jump, high jump, triple jump and shot put.

In addition to being the first meet of the season, the meet will be the first with the team’s new coaches: Byerly, Caitlin Thompson, and Randy Thompson. The past two weeks of practice have been smooth under the new coaches and the team would like to continue that going into the meet.

Byerly is also hopeful for a smooth meet and is looking forward to watching the student-athletes’ hard work pay off. “I am excited to watch my athletes compete and represent Sherwood to the best of their abilities.”
