The Rebuilding Stages

Sherwood’s recent scrimmage against Clarksburg and Seneca Valley revealed some glaring weaknesses of the Outdoor Track and Field team. After losing most of the contributing sprinters and jumpers to graduation, the team is on a down year. The roster lists well over a hundred people with only about 20 seniors remaining, so Coach Dan Reeks will look to underclassmen to help the team pick up where it left off last year.

In spite of this, the scrimmage gave reasons for optimism; the team has a solid Freshman and Sophomore Class. Sophomore Sean Enright currently leads the team in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter and started off the season with a 4:51 1600 meter. Freshman Vincent Bonsby also performed well, running a 5:01 1600 meter and 2:19 800 meter, which means he is already on track to be on varsity. Although the times are unofficial, which often brings into question the results for the sprint events, sophomore Ian Gormley’s 56-second 400 meter makes him the fastest on the team. On the girls’ side, freshman Olivia Miller ran an impressive 2:51 800 meter, which should guarantee her a spot on the 4×800 meter relay.

The outdoor track team’s first meet is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, at South River High School and will be an excellent opportunity to see how the team stacks up against the other teams in the state.
