Track and Field Finds Success at States

The outdoor track and field season came to a close on May 28 with the completion of the 4A State Championships. Sherwood sent an impressive 14 competitors- five boys and nine girls- who had excelled in their respective qualifying events.

After a first place-winning discus throw in the County Finals the week prior, senior Rachel Goldberg continued to showcase her dominance in the event by finishing 5th among all other state throwers. Fellow senior field competitors Osa Ikheloa and Alyssa Moran also completed their high school track careers strong, with a 7th place shot put throw from Ikheloa and 3rd place long jump from Moran.

Despite the loss of these and many more utility players next season, Sherwood is sure to keep their competitive streak alive; promising results have been delivered by rising runners like freshman Sofia Grossman, who placed 7th in the high jump, and sophomores Amy Guenterberg and Leah Peloff, who helped to carry their 4-by-800 relay team to 10th place.

“There were a lot of days where we were out on the track in blazing heat, huge downpours, even bitter cold, still running. I’m so proud of my team for always sticking with me and, of course, for killing it in our event,” said Guenterberg. Overall, Sherwood girls beat out 21 other Maryland schools to place 16th that day.

An end to the season does not necessarily mean that track is over for the runners and field competitors; students are encouraged by Coach Dan Reeks to keep training over the summer to keep their edge. When school begins again in August, many find themselves back on the track with familiar faces, participating in cross country.
