Girls’ varsity basketball team started their season off with two tough losses. On December 4, the Warriors faced Good Counsel, who is ranked 20 th in the nation. Outmatched against a team loaded with college recruited players, the Warriors lost 82-16. The Warriors then took on Damascus, who had previously knocked off a highly touted Paint Branch team. The Warriors went 0-2 after losing 40-25 to Damascus.

The Warriors picked their heads up despite rough start to their season, going back into practice to fix their mistakes. “We tried to not focus on our losses and attempted to focus on the future. We had two very difficult first games and we knew that going into them, so dwelling on our faults did not seem beneficial. We acknowledged that our hardest games we will most likely play all year were behind us and used that as motivation to succeed,” said junior Sammy Sundell. The team then got back on track during their nail bitter of a game against Watkins Mill, winning 54-40. Junior Amanda Allen was the leading scorer in the first three games.
Following that victory, the Warriors hosted Seneca Valley. The leading scorers in the 61-17 victory were Sundell with 12 points and Allen with 10. “Although we struggled finishing at the basket and did not shoot our best, our intensity and aggressiveness brought us home,” said Allen. “As a team, everyone got involved in this game. We shared the ball well and stopped Seneca Valley without defense. We had many shot attempts and if more would’ve fallen, we would have increased the gap by even more.”

“While we have played well at times this year, we have yet to put everything together for a complete 32 minutes,” said Coach Tim Hobbs. The 2-2 warriors’ next game is against Churchill on December 18.
