The girls’ varsity tennis team won their first divisional match against Quince Orchard with an impressive win on all seven courts September 16. Additionally, on September 18, the Warriors won another divisional match against Poolesville, with a score of 5-2. Winning divisional matches and becoming the divisional champion is crucial to the team’s success. Sherwood is in Division II this season.

“Each tennis season will produce four divisional champions and they are decided upon [by] the wins and losses versus those teams in your division. A divisional championship is difficult to achieve. The division champion moves up to the higher division for the following school year while the last place finisher moves down a division,” explained girls’ tennis coach Tom Maley.

However, the start of the season has produced some mixed results. Richard Montgomery traveled to Sherwood on September 4 and beat the Warriors 4-3 courts. Similarly, at the away game against Blair on September 11, the Warriors had a tough defeat of the same score. Sherwood came out of their slump on September 9 beating Wheaton on every court.

The number one singles player, senior Lea Owens, played a major role in the team’s victory against Quince Orchard. With score of 6-0, 6-0, she stepped up her game to win a divisional court. In the game against Wheaton, she also beat her opponents with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Owens is currently undefeated in her singles matches.

The number three doubles team of junior Kayla Cohen and freshman Mallory Carlson helped the warriors win a key match against Poolesville. Beating their opponents 6-4, 6-4, the team won the fourth court needed to defeat the other school.
