First Sherwood Student to Serve as an Officer

By Jenni Kenel ‘14

Sophomore Ketki Chauhan was recently elected to serve as the secretary for the Montgomery County Regional (MCR), the countywide student government association for high school students. Her win marks the first time in MCR history that a Sherwood student will take office for the organization. Several other Sherwood students gathered at Clarksburg High School on March 21 where the election was held in order to show their support for Chauhan in her campaign for the position.

Her term begins June 3 at the first MCR executive board meeting for the upcoming school year. Some of her duties include: taking minutes at each board meeting and general assembly, publicizing scheduled organizational activities, and advising the other officers in procedural matters. She will be working alongside President Richie Yarrow, a junior from Richard Montgomery, Vice President Eric Guerci, a freshman from Bethesda Chevy-Chase, and Treasurer Charlie Kang, another junior from Richard Montgomery.

Candidates are elected by delegates from each school that attend the general assembly, unlike the election of the Student Member of the Board (SMOB) in which the whole county votes. Each candidate is expected to say a speech that fits the time limit (four minutes for president, three for the rest) and answer questions based on an informal and formal question and answer period. Afterwards, delegates are released to go vote.

This year will not be the first time Chauhan will hold a position on a countywide organization. In the past, she has served as two deputy positions in MCR and even an officer position in MCR’s sister organization for middle school students, Montgomery County Junior Councils (MCJC), in the eighth grade.
