The Olney Farmers and Artists Market announced last month that it is now officially a nonprofit organization. The market now has the potential to receive grants enabling greater funding for community events and market operations. Donations to the market also can now be tax-deductible. The market provides the community with lively activities including chefs’ demos, live music, authentic cuisine, and more.

“One of our missions is to benefit the neediest people in our community.” said market founder Janet Terry. The market is proud to be among the largest contributors to Manna, the food bank in Montgomery Country, donating “thousands of pounds” of extra produce. Those in need can receive vouchers to buy fresh produce from market vendors. A new program called ‘OFAM Delivers’ will be starting up next season delivering fresh market produce to senior citizens.

The market was founded in 2007 by Terry, an Olney resident. After visiting a farmers market in Charleston, South Carolina, she was inspired to start one in Olney. After seven years and now with almost 100 vendors the market has grown into a part of the community we have come to enjoy.

CNN Money published an article ranking Olney as the ninth best city nationwide if you’re rich and single, mentioning the Olney Farmers Market as a reason for making the list.

Patrons can expect more from the market before this seasons end in November including their annual holiday market. This season’s holiday market will be held the second Sunday in December from 11am – 3pm and include a farm animal parade, a visit from Santa, ethnic holiday foods and more.

Sherwood students can volunteer at the market to earn SSL hours, and those interested can visit the market’s information tent.
