Is the Age of Microsoft Over?

by Nick Mourtoupalas ’13

Microsoft is confronting lackluster sales for their new operating system on their tablets and computer with their recent launch of Windows 8. While this fault may seem curable for a corporation of its size, very few of Microsoft’s properties, such as their Windows Phones, are not performing well.

In fact, Apple’s iPhone business alone is worth more than Microsoft altogether; Sherwood students can just look around to see that Microsoft has little to no influence in the smartphone market.

This is a trend that could be indicative of the corporation’s aging strategies and inability to compete with more appealing products. As Microsoft’s Surface tablet was silently launched back in October of last year, consumers were unable to find a reason to shift their attention from the iPad, being superior in power and network integration.

With not much on Microsoft’s radar to remedy its rapid decline besides hopeful speculation behind the “Xbox 720” and regular updates to some of their other properties, CEO Steve Ballmer’s position is at stake, as well the corporation’s future success.
