Warriors Look For Third Straight Championship

by Andrew Wasik ’13

Make the streak 56 straight wins in a row. The Sherwood Lady Warriors are moving on in playoffs to the state championship game after defeating Walter Johnson 3-1 on November 15.

With strong play from Alex Holston, who had 37 kills breaking the record for kills in a single match set in 1995, the Warriors defeated the Wildcats 25-13, 25-21, 18-25, 25-12. After winning the first two sets the Warriors seemed to start messing up and getting a little bit lazy, letting Walter Johnson get out to a big league that the team could not recover from. But then after the break between the two games the Warriors came back with a new fury and played their best volleyball of the whole match.

The team now moves on to play Arundel in a rematch of last year’s state championship game. The Warriors also knocked Arundel out of the state tournament in 2010 in the semifinals. It’s only fitting that they play Arundel for the chance at a “3-peat”.

Arundel previously defeated Eleanor Roosevelt 3-0 led by Shannon Kelly and Allison Orr who each had 10 kills. The undefeated team is much less of a power hitting team than last year and instead focuses on team play and communication to win games. But it is questionable whether they will be able to stop a power hitter like Alex Holston.

The state championship game, a chance for redemption for Arundel and the chance of a “3-peat” for Sherwood will be played on November 19 at 8:00 pm at Ritchie Coliseum at the University of Maryland.
