Warriors Look To Take Fifth Straight Against Dominant Paint Branch

by Michael Natelli ’14

After a big homecoming win against Springbrook (4-3), Sherwood (5-2) looks to get its fifth straight win tonight against powerhouse Paint Branch (6-1). Coach Mike Bonavia described the game as “like a State Championship [to the Warriors],” which is essentially the case. Many teams with strong records still remain in the conference, so getting a win and moving their record up to 6-2 will be critical to improve the Warriors’ playoff chances.

The Warriors will look to get their offense moving in the right direction tomorrow night, after gaining only one first down throughout the entire second half against Springbrook. There were some highly questionable calls on fumbles (but “not really”) that cost Sherwood two scores, but luckily that didn’t hurt them, as they ultimately pulled out the 14-6 victory.

On the positive side, the defense is coming off a huge game, posting what would have been two touchdowns (both called back on “penalties”), holding the Blue Devil offense to no first downs the entire second half, and six points the entire game. Holding Paint Branch to similar numbers will be crucial if the Warriors want to pull out a W tonight, because there will be limited offensive opportunities against a dominant Paint Branch defense.

Prediction
Paint Branch has played well, but Sherwood has progressed each of its last 4 games. So, look for a close score down to the end. The game will be decided by single digits one way or another.

Result
Paint Branch Panthers 14- Sherwood Warriors 13
