A Sherwood senior was indicted March 26 and charged with negligent manslaughter, as well as causing a life threatening injury under the influence of alcohol. The Warrior does not identify the name of a student charged as an adult for felony offenses until the student is found guilty in court.

Police report that the night of August 30, the senior was driving a convertible when the car hit a tree, a light pole, and a utility box before it rolled over close to the intersection of Hines Road and Macduff Avenue.

As a result of the accident, passenger and fellow Sherwood student, Sean Gangloff was killed. Maxwell Dechter, a Sherwood senior and the only other Passenger, was seriously injured and hospitalized until March 5, according to the local Gazette.

A warrant was issued for the driver’s arrest March 27. He turned himself in to the county sheriff’s office on April 10. A request has been made for the case to be transferred to Juvenile court, and a jury trial has been scheduled to take place August 10.

“Our only hope is that there may be something positive that comes from whatever the outcome may be from this trial,” said Gangloff’s parents. “We feel that there must be some sort of sentence that will hopefully send a message to all drivers that they must be responsible adults when getting behind the wheel of a car.”
