Gymnastics Finishes With Perfect Season

The gymnastics team topped off a perfect season with a first place overall finish at the MCPS County Championship meet on May 5. The Warriors dominated the meet, beating second place team Walter Johnson by nearly 10 points. Since no other counties in Maryland have high school gymnastics programs, the County Championship also served as the State Championship.

Sophomore Toni Williams won the uneven bars competition and also claimed the title for the floor exercise with sophomore Ania Pasternak finishing in second. Williams also finished second for the all-around individual title, only a tenth of a point behind the first place winner. Defending all-around individual champion and All Met senior Cassidy Deerin claimed the title for the vault exercise.

Coach Gary Peters has led the team for the last 30 years, and this season’s County Championship title was his first. “Winning is an amazing feeling.” Peters said. “It was such a relief to finally come in first, with so many second places in my 30 years to finally win an MCPS Championship.”
