Girls Volleyball Advances to the Playoffs

By Will Van Gelder ’16

The Sherwood girls’ volleyball team has advanced to the playoffs after an unbelievable undefeated season of 20-0. The Warriors went on to defeat Paint Branch handily in their opening playoff game after a first round bye. They went on to defeat Howard in another dominant straight sets victory to advance even deeper into the playoffs. The first set was close but they managed to pull further and further away as time passed, and as the sets went on. The team seems to be proving their dominance, and could make a state championship run if they keep up this shutdown style of play. The Warriors have had an absolutely dominated their division this season, managing to win not only all twenty games of the regular season, but even more impressively not allowing opposing teams to win any sets in seventeen of those twenty. Coach Benjamin Sanger deserves kudos for leading his team to such a fantastic season, managing to pull out victories through occasionally trying conditions such as the temporary suspension of two of the team’s top players. “We don’t care about who we have played or the outcome, all we look forward to is our next opponent. That is who we prepare for and focus on.” Said Sanger in response to the girl’s terrific season, in which they fought through adversity and numerous problems. The team is led by captains Kerra Tirado’15, Ariella Rodriguez ’16 and Dalton Sanchez ’15, they team leaders in points were Kaiya Heyliger-Powell ’17, Julia Gejewski-Nemes ’15, Kerra Tirado ’15 and Dalton Sanchez ’15. The team has had a remarkable season and they are going to try to advance further into the playoffs, everyone try to make it to the Regional Finals Friday night.
