After slow start, Warriors comeback to thwart the Barrons

By Alex Le

Heading into the fourth quarter, down 10-7, the Sherwood Warriors’ chances of victory seemed bleak. Other than one breakout run by Senior star running back Travis Levy (3 TDs, 185 total yards) in the second quarter, Sherwood’s offense throughout the first three quarters could only be described as stagnant. Despite the rushing attack excelling, the Warriors were a victim of their own mistakes, with flags seemingly being thrown after every snap.

The Bethesda Chevy-Chase Barons took full advantage on offense, countering with a slow and methodical attack, keeping the Warriors off the field. With the clock ticking, the crowd becoming restless, and the Barons starting to gain momentum, the Warriors decided enough was enough.

Linebacker Jackson Sherrard sparked the Warriors in the fourth quarter with two clutch interceptions, not only giving the offense great field position, but preventing the Barons from scoring. With an inspired offense, and a demoralized Baron defense, the Warriors went on a 20-0 run to win the season opener 27-10.

Despite a 17-point victory, the score was not indicative of how well Sherwood played. Plagued with careless mistakes, missed assignments, and a seemingly ineffective offense, Sherwood has much to learn from this sloppy performance.

Specifically, the Warriors need to have a strong start. With Levy heading the backfield, the Warriors offense should be able to put points up early and often. If Sherwood can establish a dominant running attack, it will open up the passing game for sophomore QB Michael Mbony while keeping the defense off the field.

With a stronger Clarksburg team visiting this Friday (September 9), the Warriors will need to bring their “A” game in order to come out with a victory.
